Making a Large Apothecary Cabinet

This is my largest project to date. It’s an apothecary style cabinet that has 21 drawers and 7 shoes cubbies. The drawers are roughly 8″ x 8″ x 10.5″. Each row of drawer fronts came from the same piece of sapele giving the front of the cabinet a nice continuous and book matched grain pattern. The outer casework is made of book matched quarter sawn sapele while the dividers are made of laminated pine panels with 3/4″ thick sapele edge banding.

The drawers are constructed using a half blind lock joint for the front joints and a housing joint for the back piece. If you want to see how to make the half blind lock joint, check out this video:

Making a Krenov Cabinet

This cabinet was designed and made for my Gordon Russell Project at Rycotewood Furniture Centre, Oxford, UK.

The piece is primarily made from Walnut, both solid and veneer, with two bookmatched spalted Beech doors. Overall, it took 5 weeks to make.

My name is Matt Estlea, I’m a 22 year old Woodworker from Basingstoke in England and my aim is to make your woodworking less s***.

I come from 5 years tuition at Rycotewood Furniture Centre and 4 years experience working at Axminster Tools and Machinery where I still currently work on weekends. During the week, I film woodworking projects, tutorials, reviews and a viewer favourite ‘Tool Duel’ where I compare two cometitive manufacturers tools against one another to find out which is best.

I like to have a laugh and my videos are quite fast paced BUT you will learn a lot, I assure you.

Lets go make a mess.

MATT ESTLEA WOODWORK 2017

Paul Spriggs | Furniture Maker at The Gloucestershire Guild Of Craftsmen

Paul Spriggs:
“As an architectural student I wrote a dissertation on Ernest Gimson, a disciple of William Morris who lived and worked at Sapperton near Cirencester around a century ago. His work was already familiar to me through a family connection. His chairs interested me; I thought of them as a starting point for my own designs, for which I was sure there was a market. I never set out to copy his work, but rather to absorb the spirit of it and make my own stamp, with chairs and other furniture.

I have been a maker for over 30 years now and never regretted the change from architecture. I work in English hardwoods, ash and oak mainly, and harvest rushes for the chairs myself. In design and execution I try to apply that attention to detail that makes the work that bit special.

My work has been featured in various publications. It is mostly domestic, although I have helped furnish various churches, a cathedral and museums.”

How to Ship Furniture

A major detail of custom furniture making that is often overlooked is shipping. I make pieces for clients all over the states and occasionally overseas. It very important after weeks of working on a piece of fine furniture that it arrives safely and undamaged to the client. There are lots of ways to wrap, box and ship furniture but I typically use 2 methods based on size to deliver my work. Make sure to read more about my shipping process in the How to Ship Furniture blog article – https://philipmorleyfurniture.com/how-to-ship-furniture

Cheers!
